Getting Your HPCSA Registration Number
For mental health professionals, after passing your board exam — the qualify, train, sit the exam, register path, for Psychologists, Registered Counsellors, and Psychometrists alike.

Overview
All mental health categories regulated by the HPCSA fall under the Professional Board for Psychology, but the path to registration differs by category. The three main categories relevant to private mental health practice are Psychologist (with subcategories: Clinical, Counselling, Educational, Industrial/Organisational, Research, Neuropsychology, Forensic), Registered Counsellor, and Psychometrist.
The general shape is the same for all three — qualify, complete supervised training, sit the national board exam, apply for registration — but the qualification level, internship/practicum length, and application form differ.
Step 1 — confirm you've met the category-specific requirements

All three categories then sit the relevant National Board Examination — pass mark 70% overall, with a sub-minimum of 70% on ethics questions for the Registered Counsellor/Psychometrist exams. In no circumstances may you work in, or be employed in, private practice while still registered as an intern/student — this only becomes possible once you convert to full/independent-practice registration.
Step 2 — wait for your results and application form
After the board exam, the Professional Board for Psychology emails your results and, once you've passed, the application form to convert to full registration. If you haven't received this within a reasonable time, contact the Board directly. Step 3 — complete and submit the registration application
Common requirements across all categories:
- Completed registration application form, category-specific — e.g. Registered Counsellors typically use Form 53, psychologists moving to independent practice typically use Form 23
- Certified copy of your ID (or birth certificate/passport, where applicable)
- Certified copy of your marriage certificate, if registering in a married surname
- Proof of successful completion of your accredited qualification
- Proof of successful completion of your supervised internship/practicum
- Proof of passing the relevant National Board Examination
- The prescribed registration fee, with proof of payment attached
Submit to the Professional Board for Psychology at HPCSA head office (Pretoria) — check the current submission channel via the registration page, as HPCSA has been moving several registration processes onto its online iRegister / self-service portal. Step 4 — fees
Two separate fee types apply to every category, though the rand amount differs by category — psychologist registration has historically been priced higher than Registered Counsellor/Psychometrist registration.
- Once-off registration fee — payable when you submit your application to move from intern/student/supervised-practice to full registration.
- Annual membership fee — payable every year by 1 April, to remain on the register. This fee increased by 3.3% for the 2026/27 cycle across all boards.
Because exact rand amounts change annually and differ by category, check hpcsa.co.za/fees directly (select "Professional Board for Psychology," then your specific category) before paying. Payment is by direct EFT/deposit into HPCSA's bank account, with your reference clearly indicated on the deposit slip. If unpaid by 1 April, you can be suspended from the register from three months after that date, with penalty fees applying to be restored.
Step 5 — once you're registered
You'll receive a registration certificate and practitioner card, and a professional registration number with a category-specific prefix — PS for Psychologist, PRC for Registered Counsellor, PMT for Psychometrist. You can verify/display your registration via the HPCSA iRegister public lookup, and you're now entitled to practise independently within your category's protected scope of practice and title. You must also accumulate CPD points annually through HPCSA-accredited workshops/courses — generally 30 points per year, including 6 ethics points, though confirm the current cycle requirement for your category. Keep certificates in a CPD portfolio; you don't need to submit them unless selected for a random HPCSA audit.

Once you have your HPCSA registration and category-specific registration number, your next step is applying for a BHF practice number — you cannot claim from medical aids, or register with any medical scheme, without both your HPCSA registration and a BHF practice number in place.
